Target Information

Mammalian apurinic/apyrimidinic endonuclease (APE/ref-1) is a multifunctional enzyme involved in DNA repair and redox regulation of other proteins related to oxidative signaling and transcription factor regulation (Fos, Jun, NF-κB, Myb, HIF-1α, CREB, Pax), cell cycle control (p53), and apoptosis.
APE repairs abasic sites in DNA caused by spontaneous loss, oxidative damage, chemical hydrolysis, ionizing radiation, UV irradiation, or removal of modified bases by DNA glycosylases.
It is differentially expressed across tissues and developmental stages, with diverse subcellular localization patterns supporting interactions with multiple cellular proteins.
Regulation of APE by phosphorylation is mediated by casein kinase II. Increased APE levels are observed upon reoxygenation of hypoxic cells and in certain malignant tissues, while decreased expression is associated with apoptosis induction.
