Target Information
SARS-CoV-2 (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2), also known as 2019-nCoV, is a virus responsible for illnesses ranging from mild cold-like symptoms to severe respiratory distress and death.
The Spike protein consists of S1 and S2 domains and serves as the main surface antigen of the coronavirus. The glycosylated Spike protein can be detected in infected cell culture supernatants using antisera from SARS patients.
The S1 domain contains the receptor-binding domain (RBD), which specifically binds to the angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) receptor on target cells. Variations in the Spike protein contribute to differences in receptor interactions and viral fusion responses among coronaviruses.
