Eukaryotic translation initiation factor 2 (EIF-2)는 단백질 합성의 초기 단계에서 GTP 및 개시 tRNA와 삼중 복합체를 형성하고 40S 리보솜 소단위와 결합하여 작용합니다. EIF-2는 알파, 베타, 감마의 세 개의 소단위로 구성되며, 이 유전자는 베타 소단위를 암호화합니다. 베타 소단위는 GDP를 GTP로 교환하여 EIF-2 복합체를 재활용합니다. 이 유전자는 다양한 아이소폼을 암호화하는 여러 전사 변이체를 가집니다.
