Target Information
The Ubiquitin C (UBC) gene encodes ubiquitin, one of the most conserved proteins known. Ubiquitin is required for ATP-dependent, nonlysosomal intracellular protein degradation of abnormal proteins and normal proteins with rapid turnover. It is covalently bound to target proteins, labeling them for degradation. Ubiquitin also binds to histone H2A in actively transcribed regions, suggesting a role in gene expression regulation. The gene consists of three direct repeats of the ubiquitin coding sequence without spacers, producing a polyubiquitin precursor. Aberrant forms have been observed in Alzheimer’s disease and Down syndrome.
