Target Information
Tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase 4 (TIMP4) is encoded by the gene TIMP4 located on chromosome 3. It belongs to the family of TIMP genes and inhibits the activity of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), which degrade components of the extracellular matrix.
TIMP4 binds irreversibly to MMPs and inactivates them with zinc as a cofactor. The netrin domain of TIMP4 is involved in platelet recruitment and aggregation. Other biological functions include responses to cytokine and peptide hormone stimuli, as well as roles in the ovulation cycle and CNS development.
