Target Information
WNK is a serine/threonine kinase that plays an important role in electrolyte homeostasis, cell signaling, survival, and proliferation. It acts as both an activator and inhibitor of sodium-coupled and potassium-coupled chloride cotransporters respectively. WNK activates SCNN1A, SCNN1B, SCNN1D, and SGK1, and localizes to the distal nephron of the kidney, which is involved in salt, potassium, and pH balance. Mutations in the WNK gene can result in pseudohypoaldosteronism and neuropathy.
