Target Information
Neurofibromin is a member of the GTPase-activating (GAP) class of proteins. These proteins enhance the GTPase activity of signaling G-Proteins like Ras. The NF1 gene is classified as a tumor suppressor gene, and mutations at the NF1 locus are associated with neurofibromas, rhabdomyosarcomas, leimyosarcomas, mental retardation, and memory deficiency. Neurofibromin also associates with intermediate filaments of the cytoskeleton and is highly expressed during desmosome formation. Mutations in NF1 lead to variable cell sizes and morphologies.
