Target Information
This gene encodes a mitochondrial matrix protein belonging to the Lon family of ATP-dependent proteases. It mediates selective degradation of misfolded, unassembled, or oxidatively damaged polypeptides in the mitochondrial matrix. Additionally, it may act as a chaperone in the assembly of inner membrane protein complexes and regulate mitochondrial gene expression and genome integrity. Decreased expression has been observed in a patient with hereditary spastic paraplegia. Alternatively spliced transcript variants have been identified for this gene.
