Target Information

CRP (C-reactive protein) is a major cyclic, pentameric acute-phase protein composed of five identical, noncovalently bound, nonglycosylated subunits (each 206 amino acids, 24 kDa).
Produced by the liver, CRP levels rise dramatically during inflammatory processes.
CRP initiates the classical complement cascade, binds nuclear components (chromatin, histones), and plays a key role in innate immunity and nonspecific host resistance.
Its levels increase 100–1000 fold in response to injury, infection, or inflammation.
CRP acts as an opsonin, activates monocytes/macrophages, and may function as a scavenger during cell necrosis.
Elevated basal CRP levels are associated with increased risk of hypertension and cardiovascular disease.
