Target Information
ATG5 (Autophagy Related 5) is a key component in autophagy and plays a role in apoptosis. It is involved in mitochondrial quality control, negative regulation of innate antiviral response, lymphocyte development, MHC II antigen presentation, and adipocyte differentiation.
Upon conjugation with ATG12, the complex aids autophagosome formation. ATG5 interacts with FADD to promote autophagic cell death and forms a cup-shaped isolation membrane during autophagosome development.
APG5 expression occurs late in apoptosis, downstream of caspase activity. The APG5-ATG12 conjugate also associates with RIG-I and VISA, inhibiting type I interferon production and facilitating viral replication.
Dysfunction of ATG5 is linked to diseases such as spinocerebellar ataxia.
