Target Information
Autophagy related protein 16L (encoded by the ATG16L1 gene) is located on chromosome 2 in humans. It is also known as WD30 or IBD10 (Inflammatory Bowel Disease 10).
ATG12 and ATG5 conjugate with each other and oligomerize with ATG16L1 to form the Atg16L complex (800 kDa), which facilitates coupling of LC3 to phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) — a key marker for autophagy.
This complex, along with other ATGs such as ATG18 and ATG21, prevents premature cleavage of ATG8-PE by the cysteine protease Atg4 until autophagosome completion.
