Target Information

Vascular endothelial growth factors (VEGFs) are a family of closely related growth factors characterized by a conserved pattern of eight cysteine residues and shared VEGF receptors. VEGFs stimulate endothelial cells, induce angiogenesis, promote cell migration, increase vascular permeability, and inhibit apoptosis.

VEGFB shares structural similarities with VEGF and PlGF and is often co-expressed with VEGF. Two alternatively spliced isoforms exist: VEGFB167 (heparin-binding, cell-associated) and VEGFB186 (secreted form). VEGFB stimulates endothelial cell proliferation and binds to the tyrosine kinase receptor VEGFR1 (flt1), but not VEGFR2.

Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor B is widely expressed, especially in the heart, skeletal muscle, and pancreas. VEGFB expression in human primary breast cancers has been associated with lymph node metastasis. The VEGFB gene is located on chromosome 11q13.
