This gene encodes a protein expressed at high levels in cardiac and skeletal muscle.
Mutations in this gene are associated with several clinical disorders including:
- Barth syndrome
- Dilated cardiomyopathy
- Hypertrophic DCM
- Endocardial fibroelastosis
- Left ventricular noncompaction
Multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been described.
Short forms lack a hydrophobic leader sequence and may exist as cytoplasmic proteins rather than membrane-bound.
Other alternatively spliced transcripts have been reported, though not all full-length sequences are known.
