Target Information
In eukaryotes, phosphorylation and dephosphorylation of proteins on serine and threonine residues regulate diverse cellular processes such as division, homeostasis, and apoptosis. Protein phosphatases (PPs) are key enzymes involved in these processes. The PP holoenzyme is typically a trimeric complex composed of a regulatory, a variable, and a catalytic subunit.
Major PP catalytic subunit families include PP1, PP2A, PP2B (calcineurin), and PP2C, with PPX (PP4) as an additional putative family member. The PP2A family comprises subfamilies PP2A alpha and PP2A beta, which associate with various regulatory subunits such as PP2A-A alpha/beta, PP2A-B alpha/beta, PP2A-C alpha/beta, and PP2A-B56 alpha/beta.
