The major pathway of eukaryotic mRNA decay involves deadenylation-dependent decapping followed by 5′ exonucleolytic degradation. Human decapping enzyme 2 (hDcp2) is an mRNA decapping enzyme with intrinsic decapping activity. In nonsense-mediated decay, the hDcp1–hDcp2 complex may be recruited to mRNAs containing premature termination codons by Upf proteins. The decapping activator complex (Lsm1p–7p) enhances recruitment and co-immunoprecipitation of the decapping complex with mRNA. Dcp2 hydrolyzes methylated capped RNA to release m7GDP, aiding mRNA degradation. Dcp1 and Dcp2 co-localize in the cytoplasm, consistent with their role in mRNA decay. - Predicted to react with: Mouse and Rat
Target Information
Decapping protein 2 (DCP2) is the major mRNA decapping enzyme in eukaryotic cells, belonging to the Nudix hydrolase superfamily. It catalyzes hydrolysis of nucleoside diphosphate-linked substrates and is widely expressed in various tissues, with highest levels in testis and brain.
Decapping is a key step in mRNA degradation, regulating gene expression and RNA turnover.
