Product Specific Information
This Crystallin AB antibody is useful for Western blot analysis, where a band is seen at approximately 20 kDa.
A band of greater intensity at around 40 kDa may represent an aggregated heteromeric complex.
CryAB aggregates with homologous proteins, including CryAA and the small heat shock protein HSP28, to form large heteromeric complexes.
Suggested positive controls:
- Human and mouse skeletal muscle lysate
- Human skeletal muscle protein
- Antigen standard for HSPB1 (transient overexpression lysate)
- Mouse skeletal muscle protein
Target Information
Lens proteins consist almost entirely of crystallins (about 95%), which are also found in vertebrate skeletal muscle tissue.
In the lens, crystallins maintain the proper refractive index. The mammalian lens contains three major classes of crystallins: alpha, beta, and gamma.
Alpha-crystallin, the largest, comprises alpha-A and alpha-B subunits and accounts for 40% of total lens protein.
It functions as a molecular chaperone, preventing aggregation that may lead to cataract formation.
Phosphorylation of alpha-crystallin may occur in response to cellular stress and contribute to structural control and protein maintenance.
Alpha-B crystallin has been linked to Alexander’s disease, where it accumulates in brain cells.
