Target Information
This gene belongs to the solute carrier family 2 (facilitated glucose transporter) and encodes an insulin-regulated glucose transporter protein.
In the absence of insulin, the protein is sequestered within muscle and adipose tissue cells. Upon insulin stimulation, it translocates to the cell surface to facilitate glucose uptake.
Mutations in this gene are associated with noninsulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM).
