Target Information
Mitochondrial DNA polymerase is a heterotrimeric enzyme composed of a homodimer of accessory subunits and a catalytic subunit. The POLG gene encodes this catalytic subunit. It contains a polyglutamine tract near the N-terminus that may be polymorphic. Mutations in this gene are associated with disorders such as:
- Progressive external ophthalmoplegia with mitochondrial DNA deletions 1 (PEOA1)
- Sensory ataxic neuropathy, dysarthria, and ophthalmoparesis (SANDO)
- Alpers-Huttenlocher syndrome (AHS)
- Mitochondrial neurogastrointestinal encephalopathy syndrome (MNGIE)
