Target Information
This gene encodes class IV alcohol dehydrogenase 7 (mu or sigma subunit), a member of the alcohol dehydrogenase family. These enzymes metabolize ethanol, retinol, aliphatic alcohols, hydroxysteroids, and lipid peroxidation products. Although inefficient in ethanol oxidation, ADH7 is highly active as a retinol dehydrogenase and may participate in retinoic acid synthesis, important for cellular differentiation. Expression is much higher in stomach than in liver, distinguishing it from other family members.
