Target Information
This gene belongs to the equilibrative nucleoside transporter family. It encodes a transmembrane glycoprotein that localizes to plasma and mitochondrial membranes, mediating nucleoside uptake from the surrounding medium. The protein functions as an equilibrative transporter sensitive to inhibition by nitrobenzylthioinosine. Nucleoside transporters are essential for nucleotide synthesis in cells lacking de novo synthesis pathways and facilitate uptake of cytotoxic nucleosides used in cancer and antiviral therapies. Multiple alternatively spliced variants encoding the same protein have been identified.
