Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the INK4 family of cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitors. This protein interacts with CDK4 or CDK6 and prevents activation of CDK kinases, functioning as a cell growth regulator controlling G1 phase progression. Ectopic expression suppresses growth of human cells with wild-type RB1 function. Knockout mouse studies suggest roles in spermatogenesis regulation and tumor suppression. Two alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding the same protein have been reported.
