Versican은 aggrecan, brevican, neurocan을 포함하는 대형 응집성 프로테오글리칸 패밀리의 구성원입니다. 섬유성, 관절, 탄성 연골뿐 아니라 신경, 표피, 동맥 및 느슨한 결합 조직 등 다양한 조직에 분포합니다. Versican V1은 세포 증식을 촉진하고 세포 변형을 유도하며, proapoptotic 단백질 Bad의 발현을 하향 조절하여 세포를 세포사멸로부터 보호하는 역할을 합니다. 또한 인간 기도에서 염증 관련 단백질로서의 역할이 보고되었습니다.
