GABRA5는 포유류 뇌의 주요 억제성 신경전달물질인 GABA의 일부로, GABA-A 수용체에서 작용합니다. 이 수용체는 리간드 개폐 염화 채널이며, 벤조디아제핀 등의 결합에 의해 염화 이온 전도성이 조절될 수 있습니다. GABA-A 수용체는 최소 16개의 서로 다른 서브유닛으로 구성되어 있으며, 세 가지 상이한 비암호화 첫 번째 엑손을 사용하는 전사 변이체가 보고되었습니다.
