Enolase 1 is a multifunctional enzyme involved in glycolysis and various processes such as growth control, hypoxia tolerance, and allergic responses. It may function in the fibrinolytic system as a receptor and activator of plasminogen on cell surfaces, stimulating immunoglobulin production.

Enolase 2 exhibits neurotrophic and neuroprotective properties across CNS neurons, binding in a calcium-dependent manner to neocortical neurons to promote survival.
