Gephyrin은 신경세포에서 억제성 신경전달 수용체를 시냅스 후 세포골격에 고정시키는 단백질로, 수용체 소단위 도메인과 튜불린 이합체에 대한 높은 친화성 결합을 통해 작용합니다. 비신경조직에서는 molybdenum cofactor 생합성에도 필수적입니다. 이 유전자 변이는 신경학적 질환인 hyperplexia와 molybdenum cofactor 결핍과 관련이 있을 수 있습니다. 다양한 스플라이싱 변이체가 보고되었으나, 모든 전장 형태는 완전히 규명되지 않았습니다.
