Target Information
The Factor XIII A gene encodes the coagulation factor XIII A subunit, the final zymogen activated in the blood coagulation cascade.
Plasma factor XIII is a heterotetramer of two A subunits (catalytic) and two B subunits (non-enzymatic, carrier function).
Platelet factor XIII consists only of two A subunits identical to the plasma form.
Upon activation by thrombin and calcium, B subunits dissociate, producing active Factor XIIIa, a transglutaminase that crosslinks fibrin molecules, stabilizing the clot.
It also crosslinks α2-plasmin inhibitor or fibronectin to fibrin α chains.
Deficiency in Factor XIII can cause lifelong bleeding tendency, poor wound healing, and habitual abortion.
