Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is a strong inhibitor of neuronal transmission and is found throughout the central nervous system.
GABA is formed by the decarboxylation of glutamate, resulting in two distinct receptor types: GABA-A and GABA-B.
Binding of GABA to GABA-A receptors increases chloride ion transport into neurons, leading to signal transmission repression.
Deficiency in GABA-mediated signaling can cause system overload, blackouts, rapid body contractions, seizures, and epilepsy.
