Alpha, beta, and gamma actin isoforms have been identified:
- Alpha actins are a major constituent of the contractile apparatus.
- Beta and gamma actins are involved in the regulation of cell motility.
This actin is an alpha actin found in skeletal muscle. Mutations in this gene are associated with several congenital myopathies, including:
- Nemaline myopathy type 3
- Congenital myopathy with excess thin myofilaments
- Congenital myopathy with cores
- Congenital myopathy with fiber-type disproportion
These conditions lead to muscle fiber defects.
