Target Information
Parvalbumin (PV) is a calcium-binding protein expressed in specific muscle fibers and fast-firing neurons. It belongs to the EF-hand protein family and plays a role in calcium decay during muscle contraction and relaxation cycles. Higher parvalbumin levels correlate with faster muscle relaxation rates. PV is also expressed in certain GABAergic interneurons that help maintain excitation–inhibition balance in the cortex and hippocampus. In amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), PV immunoreactivity is absent in neuron populations lost early in the disease.
