Target Information
Neuronal PAS domain protein 3 (NPAS3) is a brain-enriched basic helix-loop-helix PAS domain transcription factor that is broadly expressed in the developing neuroepithelium. It has been associated with genetic translocation in a family affected by schizophrenia. NPAS3 regulates FGF signaling in the dentate gyrus by controlling FGF receptor subtype 1 expression, influencing neurogenesis.
NPAS3-deficient mice show growth retardation, brain structural defects (including reduced anterior hippocampus size, corpus callosum hypoplasia, and enlarged ventricles), and behavioral abnormalities. They also exhibit disruptions in neurosignaling pathways involving glutamate, dopamine, and serotonin, highlighting NPAS3's essential role in brain development.
At least three isoforms of NPAS3 are known to exist.
