Target Information
Fibronectin is a disulfide-bonded dimer with a molecular weight range of 230–250 kDa. In the extracellular matrix of connective tissues and vessels, fibronectin exists as an insoluble, cross-linked protein forming high molecular mass polymers. It is abundant during embryonic development and tissue remodeling and also found as a soluble plasma protein.
Fibronectin consists of repeating modules forming domains that interact with fibronectin itself, other matrix components (e.g., collagen, heparin), and cell surface receptors (e.g., integrins). It plays a critical role in cell adhesion and migration, including processes such as embryogenesis, wound healing, blood coagulation, host defense, and metastasis.
Fibronectin expression is elevated in non-small cell lung carcinoma, where its interaction with carcinoma cells enhances tumorigenicity and resistance to apoptosis induced by chemotherapeutic agents. The FN1 gene undergoes alternative splicing, potentially generating up to 20 transcript variants, though not all have been fully characterized.
