IARS는 아미노아실-tRNA 합성효소 계열 단백질로, 해당 아미노산을 해당 tRNA에 결합시키는 반응을 촉매합니다. 이러한 효소들은 단백질 합성 과정의 핵심 역할을 수행하며, 진화 초기부터 존재한 단백질로 추정됩니다. Isoleucine-tRNA synthetase는 class-I 아미노아실-tRNA 합성효소 패밀리에 속하며, 다발성 근염/피부근염(polymyositis/dermatomyositis) 환자에서 자가항체의 표적 단백질로 확인된 바 있습니다. 두 가지 대체 스플라이싱 변이가 보고되어 있으며, 이는 서로 다른 5' UTR을 포함합니다.
