Target Information
GRP78 (78 kDa glucose regulated protein) belongs to the heat shock protein family, including HSP70. It resides in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and interacts with newly synthesized secretory and membrane proteins, as well as misfolded proteins targeted for degradation. The conserved C-terminal KDEL sequence ensures ER protein retention via the KDEL receptor. GRP78 plays a critical role in protein folding, degradation of misfolded proteins, and maintenance of cellular homeostasis. It also has neuroprotective functions and is considered a biomarker for hypoglycemia. Reduced GRP78 expression is linked to Alzheimer’s disease and certain PS1 gene mutations, and its induction has been associated with antitumor drug resistance.
