Target Information

CD44 is a 100 kDa type I transmembrane glycoprotein widely expressed on human leukocytes, brain white matter, and various epithelial cells. It acts as a receptor for hyaluronic acid (HA) and plays a role in cell-cell interactions, adhesion, and migration. CD44 is involved in lymphocyte activation, recirculation, and homing, and its expression can be upregulated in certain carcinomas, potentially linked to metastatic potential.
It is expressed in hematopoietic and non-hematopoietic cells, epithelial tissues, filopodia of keratinocytes, bone marrow myeloid cells, and memory T cells. Peripheral B and T cells can also upregulate CD44 upon stimulation. The CD44 gene undergoes complex alternative splicing, generating multiple isoforms with distinct functions. Dysregulation of CD44 is associated with diseases such as superficial keratitis and lichen sclerosus and may be implicated in tumor metastasis.
