Target Information
The AARS2 gene encodes a mitochondrial alanyl-tRNA synthetase, a class-II aminoacyl-tRNA synthetase responsible for attaching alanine to tRNA(Ala) during protein synthesis. This enzyme plays a crucial role in mRNA translation and mitochondrial function. Mutations in AARS2 are associated with combined oxidative phosphorylation deficiency 8. The enzyme catalyzes a two-step reaction: activation of alanine by ATP to form Ala-AMP, followed by transfer to tRNA(Ala). It also corrects mischarged tRNA(Ala) through its editing domain.
