Target Information
Heterochromatin protein-1 (HP1) is a methyl-lysine binding protein localized at heterochromatin sites, mediating gene silencing. Mammalian methyltransferases that methylate histone H3 at lysine-9 create a binding site for HP1 proteins, which act as adaptor molecules involved in gene silencing and chromatin structure. The HP1 chromodomain specifically interacts with methylated lysine-9 on histone H3. In vivo, heterochromatin association of HP1 proteins is lost in Suv39h double-knockout mouse fibroblasts but restored after reintroduction of catalytically active SUV39H1 HMTase.
