Target Information
The oxytocin receptor (OXTR) belongs to the G-protein coupled receptor family. Its activity is mediated by G proteins which activate a phosphatidylinositol-calcium second messenger system. The receptor consists of 389 amino acids and has a molecular weight of approximately 43 kDa. The oxytocin-oxytocin receptor system is important for uterine contractions during parturition and milk ejection. Oxytocin receptors are expressed in the mammary gland, uterus (myometrium and endometrium), and central nervous system, where they mediate behaviors such as maternal bonding, social recognition, sexual and aggressive responses, and stress regulation.
