Target Information
Ferritin is a ubiquitous and highly conserved protein that plays a major role in iron homeostasis. It forms a holoenzyme shell (~450 kDa) composed of 24 subunits (H and L types) capable of storing up to 4,500 ferric iron atoms. The H/L ratio varies by tissue and physiological state. Ferritin functions in iron regulation alongside transferrin and its receptor, and contributes to cellular defense against stress and inflammation. It is mainly found in the liver, spleen, kidney, and heart, with trace amounts in blood. Blood ferritin levels indicate the body’s iron storage status.
