Target Information
This gene encodes an incretin hormone and belongs to the glucagon superfamily. The encoded protein plays a key role in maintaining glucose homeostasis by stimulating insulin secretion from pancreatic beta-cells following food ingestion and nutrient absorption. It activates adenylyl cyclase and other signal transduction pathways via its G protein-coupled receptor. It is a relatively weak inhibitor of gastric acid secretion.
