CDH4는 칼슘 의존적 세포-세포 접착에 관여하는 클래식 카드헤린으로, 5개의 세포외 카드헤린 반복, 막관통 영역, 보존된 세포질 꼬리를 포함하는 당단백질입니다. 닭과 생쥐 연구에서 뇌 분절화 및 신경 성장에 중요한 역할을 하며, 신장 및 근육 발달에도 관여하는 것으로 알려져 있습니다. 또한 cadherin 2와 4의 안정적인 cis-heterodimer 형성을 통해 카드헤린 간 이형이합체 형성이 가능함이 밝혀졌습니다. 이 유전자에는 서로 다른 아이소폼을 암호화하는 세 가지 전사 변이가 존재합니다.
