Target Information
The SMAD1 protein belongs to the SMAD family, which includes proteins homologous to Drosophila mothers against decapentaplegic (Mad) and C. elegans Sma. SMAD proteins act as signal transducers and transcriptional modulators in multiple signaling pathways. SMAD1 mediates bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) signals involved in cell growth, apoptosis, morphogenesis, development, and immune responses. Upon BMP ligand stimulation, SMAD1 is phosphorylated by BMP receptor kinase and forms a complex with SMAD4, essential for transcriptional regulation. It is also a target for SMAD-specific E3 ubiquitin ligases (SMURF1, SMURF2), leading to ubiquitination and proteasome-mediated degradation. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding the same protein have been observed.
