Sall4 단백질은 인간 염색체 20에 위치한 Sall4 유전자에 의해 암호화되며, Spalt-like 단백질 패밀리에 속합니다. 체세포 줄기세포 유지에 중요한 역할을 하며, 줄기세포 바이오마커로 연구되고 있습니다. Zinc finger 전사인자로서 Oct4, Sox2와 상호작용하며 Nanog 복합체를 형성하여 배아줄기세포(ESC)의 다능성을 유지합니다. 또한 p53, Bmi-1, Bcl2, XIAP 등의 표적 유전자와 관련된 종양 바이오마커 및 암유전자 기능 연구에도 활용됩니다.
