Target Information
Phosphorylase kinase is a hexadecameric enzyme composed of four copies of four subunits encoded by the PHKA, PHKB, PHKG, and PH genes. This serine/threonine-specific kinase converts glycogen phosphorylase b to glycogen phosphorylase a, releasing glucose-1-phosphate from glycogen.
PHKB (Phosphorylase b kinase regulatory subunit beta) is a 1093 amino acid subunit with regulatory functions controlled by phosphorylation. Mutations in PHKB cause glycogen storage disease type 9B, characterized by mild hepatomegaly, slightly elevated transaminase and plasma lipids, no muscle involvement, and gradual improvement with age.
Four isoforms of PHKB exist due to alternative splicing.
