Target Information
Caspases are a family of cysteine proteases divided into apoptotic and inflammatory subfamilies. Unlike apoptotic caspases, inflammatory caspases are primarily involved in immune responses to microbial pathogens rather than cell death. Members of this subfamily include caspase-1, -4, -5, and -12, which can activate proinflammatory cytokines such as IL-1β and IL-18. Caspase-1 was first identified as an IL-1β–converting enzyme and later recognized as a mammalian homolog of the C. elegans cell death gene ced-3, capable of inducing apoptosis in fibroblasts when overexpressed.
