Target Information

Sterol regulatory element-binding proteins (SREBPs) are transcription factors belonging to the basic helix-loop-helix leucine zipper family of DNA-binding proteins. Three isoforms (SREBP-1a, SREBP-1c, and SREBP-2) have been identified in mammalian tissues, differing in structure, regulation, and function.

SREBPs exist as 120 kDa inactive precursors in the endoplasmic reticulum membrane. Upon activation, they translocate to the Golgi, undergo proteolytic cleavage, and form mature transcriptionally active fragments (60–78 kDa).

In liver and adipose tissues, SREBPs regulate lipid and cholesterol accumulation by inducing genes involved in these metabolic processes. SREBP-1 primarily regulates triglyceride synthesis, whereas SREBP-2 is more closely linked to cholesterol synthesis.
