Target Information
The SON protein binds to a specific DNA sequence upstream of the regulatory sequence of the core promoter and second enhancer of human hepatitis B virus (HBV). This binding represses HBV core promoter activity, transcription of HBV genes, and production of HBV virions.
The protein shares sequence similarity with other DNA-binding proteins such as gallin, MYC family oncoproteins, and MOS. It may play roles in protecting cells from apoptosis and in pre-mRNA splicing.
Several transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been described, with two full-length forms identified.
