Target Information
Erythropoietin (EPO) protein is a growth factor essential for the survival, proliferation, and differentiation of erythroid precursors. It induces the final maturation of partially differentiated erythroid cells and promotes production of hemoglobin. The EPO receptor (EPOR) is highly expressed on precursor cells and decreases with maturation.
During fetal development, hepatocytes are the main source of EPO, while interstitial kidney cells produce EPO after birth and in adulthood. EPO expression increases under hypoxia and may also contribute to neuronal tissue protection and repair.
