Target Information

Lactoferrin (LF) is an iron-binding glycoprotein composed of a single polypeptide chain (~80 kDa) folded into two homologous lobes, each capable of reversibly binding one ferric ion (Fe³⁺). It is found in external fluids such as milk and mucosal secretions and is a major component of neutrophil secondary granules.
Lactoferrin plays roles in iron homeostasis, host defense against microbial infections, anti-inflammatory activity, cellular growth regulation, and cancer protection. It binds Fe³⁺ efficiently, depriving microbes of iron, and exhibits bactericidal and proteolytic activities, cleaving arginine-rich microbial proteins.
Three isoforms (LTF-α, LTF-β, LTF-γ) have been identified, with receptors expressed in the gastrointestinal tract, macrophages, lymphocytes, neutrophils, platelets, and some bacteria.
