AKR1C3는 aldo/keto reductase 초가족에 속하는 효소로, 40개 이상의 효소 및 단백질로 구성되어 있습니다. 이 효소들은 NADH 및/또는 NADPH를 보조인자로 사용하여 알데하이드와 케톤을 해당 알코올로 전환합니다. AKR1C3는 prostaglandin D2, PGH2, phenanthrenequinone(PQ)의 환원 반응과 9-alpha,11-beta-PGF2의 산화 반응을 촉매합니다. 알레르기 질환(예: 천식)의 발병 기전에 관여할 수 있으며, 세포 성장 및 분화 조절에도 역할을 할 수 있습니다. 이 유전자는 다른 세 개의 유전자와 높은 서열 유사성을 가지며, 염색체 10p15-p14 영역에 함께 위치합니다.
