Target Information
The protein encoded by the MCM4 gene is one of the highly conserved mini-chromosome maintenance proteins essential for eukaryotic genome replication initiation. The hexameric MCM complex is a key component of the pre-replication complex (pre_RC) and may participate in replication fork formation and recruitment of other DNA replication-related proteins.
This complex, consisting of MCM2, MCM4, MCM6, and MCM7, possesses DNA helicase activity and may function as a DNA unwinding enzyme. Phosphorylation by CDC2 kinase reduces helicase activity and chromatin binding. The gene is located on chromosome 8 adjacent to PRKDC/DNA-PK, involved in DNA double-strand break repair. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding the same protein have been reported.
